Alissa Finn of Street Theatre and Suzi Digby OBE will sing with Doorstep Carols 2021

LONDON

Popchoir will be leading a massed choir under the tree at Trafalgar Square as part of the Doorstep Carols nationwide event. We invite everyone, whether choirs, individual singers, families or colleagues, to come and join us for this hour of festive music and the opportunity to sing some favourite carols together in this iconic setting under the Christmas Tree.

Popchoir is one of the largest community based choirs in London - frequently seen out and about in the Capital singing our own blend of infectious pop music and raising money for charity. We know the enormous value of singing together with others - the health benefits are enormous and well reported - from improvement in respiration (especially important during this pandemic) to all the mental health and well-being benefits that come from singing and making music with other people. We are therefore delighted to be advocates and leaders for this wonderful nationwide initiative to get the whole country singing together at this lovely time of year when being together means so much to us all. We want everyone to be part of this event and we encourage everyone to join in and sing wherever they are.

So if you’re in London, why not come on down, to sing with us. It will be an amazing night and you’ll be part of something very special.

The Spread a Smile choir is made up of children undergoing treatment for serious or terminal illness and their siblings.  They will be leading singing with families of children who are being treated in hospital this Christmas.

With visiting hours limited due to Covid restrictions, children in hospital suffering with serious and terminal illness have been seperated from their loved ones.  Spread a Smile have continued to deliver their entertainment and support virtually and have provided comfort and welcome distraction in extremely challenging circumstances.

With visiting still restricted, Doorstep Carols provides an opportunity for children to connect with their loved ones in song.  Knowing that they are singing together even though they are apart.  Some families may join the Spread a Smile Choir, others will sing in their streets and raise money for the charities that support their children throughout treatment.

One member of the Spread a Smile choir will be recieving treatment at GOSH on Wednesday 15th December.  She will be leading singing inside the hospital creating a magical connection with the choir to which she belongs.

BIRMINGHAM

 Singing Medicine
A team of Singing Medicine Vocal Tutors will be leading carol singing in the outdoor spaces in and around Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Hospital Trust staff will be invited to come and join in with the singing and where appropriate, children will be able to join in from inside the hospital (windows open and radio turned on).

Academy of Vocal Music
The Academy singers will take a break from their Christmas concert rehearsal to join in with the event from outside St Paul’s Church in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, joined by their family members, Ex Cathedra Ladywood Community Choir and other members of the Ex Cathedra community who may wish to participate.

SHREWSBURY

Shrewsbury is where this all started in 2020 - organised by My Shrewsbury magazine and Shropshire Festivals.

The 'epicentre' Doorstep Carols event in 2021 will be Shrewsbury's Carols in the Square, hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire, with Shrewsbury Brass Band providing the backing music for the whole nation to sing along to! Other 'hub' events will be held across Shrewsbury, in the Market Hall, shopping centres, in Severn Hospices, at the start of The Shropshire Way and more...plus Santa and his sleigh will be visiting participating streets across town on the night.

WINCHESTER

Cathedral Choirs will lead Doorstep Carols, bringing their magic to the heart of the Christmas Market in Winchester and creating a truly memorable Christmas event.

EDINBURGH

Music Charity 'Love Music' have been hatching a local plan in Edinburgh for December 15th, and 100+ carollers ready to singalong.
The Love Music Community Choir and the Stockbrige and New Town Community Orchestra (colloquially known as Snotco) will lead the event.

Taking over a green community space, Leith Links, next door to a community city croft and situated in the heart of residential Leith in North Edinburgh, Love Music is connecting with local community hubs, primary school, a nearby care home and community support agencies to create a special and inclusive musical event this Christmas.

Military Wives Choirs will be joining in song across the nation, leading the singing in their own communities.

With special link ups with military choirs and military bases home and abroad, solidiers will have the opportunity to sing with their families and the nation that they serve this Christmas.

CareUK have engaged all 126 of their carehomes across the UK, providing residents the opportunity to sing with their loved ones this Christmas.

Some residents will knit hats and scarfs to wear on the night, others will prepare food and drink treats to enjoy afterwards – like hot chocolate, mulled wine and mince pies.

Music is a vital lifeline for many elderly people, particulaly those suffering with dementia.  We are delighted to know that residents in CareUK homes are being offered this opportunity to sing together in such a joyful and meaningful way.
