Carols On the Doorstep

Wednesday, December 16th, 6pm

and Thursday 24th December, 6pm - stream the carols again through the BBC Sounds website.

Radio stations will not be streaming live on Christmas Eve but you can still find the backing music for the carols here. We suggest you nominate one person to be in charge of the music and play it loudly for the entire street to enjoy.

We had such an awesome time on Wednesday 16th December - back in 2021 for another big singalong.

See below for who took part December 16th 2020

We  had such a brilliant reaction from communities up and down the UK and many BBC local radio stations are confirmed getting involved. Have a look below and see if your area took part. If not, maybe consider contacting your local radio station to ask if they will join us in 2021- how amazing would it be to have the whole country singing together?

Currently, you were able to listen in: Andover, Aylesbury, Berkshire, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cambridgeshire, Coalville and Ashby, Coventry & Warwickshire (CWR), Derby, Doncaster, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hereford & Worcester, Herne Bay, Humberside, Kent, Leyland, Lincolnshire, Melton Mowbray, New Forest, Northampton, Nottingham, Oxford, Shropshire, Solent, Somerset, Stoke, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, West Midlands (WM), Wiltshire, Wye Valley, York.

Please scroll down and find your local station and cick through to their page for your area specific downloadable invitations to print off and give to friends and neighbours.

We are proud that the following areas signed up to play along on the 16th December 2020 at 6pm, so all you have to do is tune in...BBC Radio Shropshire, BBC Radio Derby, BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Oxford, BBC Radio West Midlands (WM), BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, BBC Essex, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Northampton, BBC Radio Suffolk, BBC Radio Surrey, BBC Radio Sussex, BBC Radio Stoke, BBC Hereford & Worcester, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire (CWR), BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Radio York, BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Solent, BBC Radio Somerset, BBC Radio Wiltshire, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, BBC Radio Nottingham, BBC Radio Berkshire, Red Kite Radio, Andover Radio, Radio Leyland, 103 The Eye, Hermitage FM, Hope FM, Sine FM, Forest FM, Wye Valley Radio, Cabin FM

We will be adding to this page as we get asked more questions - if you can't find your answer please do get in contact.

How will we know when to sing?

On the 24th December at 6pm simply tune in to the BBC Sounds website - Visit Get involved for more information. Carols will be playing until 7pm, so you can sing or play them all, or dip in and out - it's up to you!

will we be in sync?

If you decide to listen via the internet, there may be a delay - make sure you chat to your neighbours about what they're doing or even better get a loud radio for the whole street to sing along to!

We are hoping for more local radio stations for 2021 - so why not contact your local station and ask them if they will join in? You can find the list of local stations at

BBC Local Radio

Some regions are doing their own thing though and that's great too!

can I choose my own charity?

Absolutely yes! We have chosen four local to us in Shropshire, where this started - click on:

Now this has 'gone national' we are suggesting a minimum donation of £2 to sing to the national charity Mind UK - however you can piggyback this event to raise money for good causes where you live and use our branding and logos etc to do so. How you do this is up to you!

how do I organise this where i live?

We have made invitations and flyers available for you to download from our website - click on:

street organisers

You are welcome to use any of our templates to distribute to friends and neighbours, or to share via social media to let people know this is taking place.

Here is a good example of a region 'owning' the event and promoting it where they live:

what should I share on social media?

Thank you for helping to get the word out! We suggest the following text (if you include the web address, a picture will appear automatically in the post)

Have you heard of the event Carols on the Doorstep that will take place across the UK on Wednesday, December 16th at 6pm? Please help by sharing this post to get as many people singing as possible! To find out how to get involved visit

what about christmas eve?

Whilst we'd love everyone to do this again at 6pm on Christmas Eve, we can't expect local radio stations to do another live broadcast across the country! However, if your street would like to repeat it, and you are able to organise yourselves, you will be able to listen again on BBC Sounds (see below) - everyone will need to press 'play' together! Or you might use a PA system - or get musicans to provide your backing track! We'll leave it to you...

You can listen live   here during the carols on December 16th and then also listen again any time you like, including on Christmas Eve!

how did it all start?

As all good things do - with a crazy idea! Hyperlocal magazine My Shrewsbury teamed up with award-winning events organisers Shropshire Festivals to sow the seeds of the idea in Shropshire. A few silly videos later and the rest is history!

We are especially grateful to BBC Radio Shropshire for being the first local radio station to join the party and helping us to get this off the ground!

Thank you all so very much for helping us to make Christmas a little bit happier this year.

Katy & Beth

Katy Rink edits the much loved hyperlocal magazine My Shrewsbury, whilst Beth Heath is 'Director of Fun' for the brilliantly colourful Shropshire events company Shropshire Festivals.

How does it work?

Simply sing along on the night - in household bubbles only!
Help us spread the word with your neighbours and kindly like/follow/share our Facebook page @Doorstepcarols
The carols will be broadcast on local radio* to help us all stay in time and carols sheets & music will be available to download here.
If you would like to organise your own street and do something special - perhaps with musicians on doorsteps too - then that's great too!
